What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy takes a client centred holistic approach and considers physical, psychological, emotional, cognitive, social and environmental factors. Occupational Therapists (OTs) work with individuals to promote function, facilitate recovery, optimise independence and overcome barriers. OTs work to identify strengths and weaknesses through a client centred assessment process and aim to set realistic and achievable goals. OTs work across the life span, in nurseries, home environments, schools, colleges, work places and care/nursing homes.

Bsc (hons) Occupational Therapy

About Me

After completing a BA hons degree in Occupational Therapy in 1998 I have worked in both NHS acute hospitals and community settings before moving into the independent sector. I worked as an NHS Advanced Occupational Therapist in a community Integrated Disability Team for children for 23 years and was responsible for managing a diverse caseload. I have previously worked as a case manager but now work as an independent OT with both adults and children. I have extensive experience with clients who have complex needs, physical disabilities, life limiting illness, traumatic brain injuries, cerebral palsy, learning difficulties, neurological disorders, spinal injuries, sensory processing and handwriting. I am able to complete detailed initial assessments, devise intervention programmes and assess for equipment and adaptations, making appropriate recommendations.

I am committed to continuing professional practice. I am a Bobath trained therapist and am currently working towards the Certificate in Ayres Sensory Integration. Bobath is an assessment and intervention technique which focusses on promoting normal movement patterns in children and adults with neurological conditions such as Cerebral Palsy. I maintain a high level of professional development by regularly engaging in clinical supervision, attending courses, conferences and seminars.

What Services do We Offer?

Children & families

As an OT I seek to enhance a child’s development both in educational settings and home environments. Intervention at the right stage in a child’s journey helps them develop the foundation skills that form the building blocks for learning in later years.

Adults

As an OT I can support adults of any age who have difficulties participating in their daily activities and roles. It is these daily activities, or occupations, that enable people to live independently, with a sense of purpose and meaning.

Case Managers

As an OT I work closely with Case Managers
in order to provide detailed assessments and recommendations to assist with formulating
a rehabilitation programme for clients
who have experienced an injury.
